University Retrofit, Midwest U.S.Location: Indiana
Product: iWindow AL Series
Construction Type: Commercial Retrofit
Objective: Improve the thermal inefficiency of 50-year-old monolithically glazed non-thermally broken tubular aluminum framing system in the administration offices of the University. In addition, improve the indoor comfort and environment, particularly for university employees working near the windows, who often complained of feeling cold and experiencing drafts during winter day time work hours.
Serious Solution: iWindow AL in Dark Bronze powered by HSHG SeriousGlass was installed in an office with approximately 72 square feet of monolithic bronze tinted glass captured in a tubular aluminum framing system, installed on the west facade of the university building.
Greater Indoor Comfort, Warmer Room Temperatures with HVAC SavingsWinter comfort impact is largely driven by inside glass surface temperature. The higher the R-value, or lower the U-value, the more comfortable a person will be sitting near a window.
In this installation, iWindow dramatically improved indoor comfort of the University employees by improving the inside glass surface temperatures by 22° F, making it noticeably more comfortable for employees to be working at their desks at the perimeter of the office spaces next to the windows.
Moreover, immediately following the install, the thermostat set-point showed a 1° F increase of the room temperature – without adjusting the thermostat. There was also a distinct reduction in exterior noise transmission.
