Hudson HouseClaverack, New York
Architect: Dennis Wedlick
Windows: Series 725
Construction Type: New Construction
Design Standard: Passive House
Objective: Architect Dennis Wedlick set with the goal to “design a high-performance home that was both beautiful and quick to build.” The Hudson Passive Project, with support from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, aims to be the first certified Passive House in New York State.
Serious Solution: According to Dennis Wedlick “the windows—SeriousWindows—turned out to be the key factor between success and failure.” Because the home sought to adhere to the Passive House requirement of reducing 90% of energy consumption without relying on any onsite energy generation, the structure and design of the house was the key. The Hudson House’s double-height glass wall on the south side of the structure serves both functional and aesthetic purposes: it allows the winter sun to passively heat the home during the cold New York winters, and it infuses the traditional barn-style structure with a modern twist.
