Renovation of 1970s South Boulder HomeArchitect: Andy Johnson, DAJ Design
Windows: 925 Series
Construction Type: Deep Energy Retrofit
Design Standard: Net Zero Energy
Objective: Owner Jeff Hohensee, a consultant for sustainable living options, decided in 2008 to practice what he preached. He and his wife Rachel embarked on a two-year project to make their drafty house, built in the 1970s high in the Rocky Mountains, into a Net Zero Energy home. With the support of EcoFutures Building the Hohensees increased insulation and made the envelope airtight, installed an array of solar panels and replaced all their old windows with SeriousWindows.
Serious Solution: 925 Series SeriousWindows installed in this renovated and energy retrofitted house helped to create a home capable of producing enough energy to satisfy domestic needs, power a future electric car, and still have a net-negative annual energy balance. It worked! The Hohensees used to get power bills of up to $500 per month to heat their home. In the last year and a half they put 2,000 kilowatt-hours back onto the grid!
